Jacks Back

Sometimes called Jacks and Reverse, or Jackson, this game proceeds exactly like ordinary Jacks. If no one opens for high on the first round, the game reverts to Lowball Draw. If no one opens for low, a new deal must be made, usually after sweetening the ante. The playing requirements for high are the same as in Jacks; for low, the same as in Lowball Draw. The only exceptions are small straights and flushes. Obviously, a wheel is a much better low hand than high hand, and should therefore be checked during the first round. It's worth a raise for high, though, if someone else opens with jacks or better.

In any event, act promptly when you hold a small straight or flush in this game; if you have to stop to figure out whether an eighty-seven flush works better for high or low, the opposition will quickly peg you for a pat hand. Jacks Back is one of the better "Dealer's Choice" games, and is lust the ticket to liven up a slow session of Jacks.

Chance of Winning

Paigow Poker

Either of these scales gives everyone plenty of excuse to stay, so that practically the only time a poker player drops out is when he has two very low cards in different suits. Now, since people are playing liberally, anybody with an ace or king in the hole or a pair back to back is going to raise on the first card. As a result, by the time the later cards are dealt there is so much money in the pot that no one who sees any possible chance of winning is going to drop out, while the players who have a good chance are going to raise back and forth.
The only real technique in this game consists of pushing good hands to the limit. For instance, if you have pair back to back, raises on the first card, and if you are raised back, raise again. True, the man who has raised back may have a better pair than you, but you are undoubtedly better than the other four or five players who are trailing along and hence are getting very good odds for your money.

Playing with Three Cards

Furthermore, if your first three cards are of the same suit, the chances are only three to two against your making a four flush. Accordingly, if there are several people in the pot, it is well worth your while to raise several times, unless there is a pair showing. You may be certain that the player who is raising you back has already made a pair, but the odds are greatly against his improving further. Hence, there is a definite percentage in favor of your raising back.
Another situation where you can afford to raise on probabilities occur when your first four cards consist of, say, the queen, ten, deuce, of spades, and another deuce. In this situation ten cards will give you a four flush, six cards two pairs, and two cards three of a kind. In other words, you have eighteen chances out of forty-eight of improving, and the odds against you are but five to three. Accordingly, with several people in the pot, you should raise against a better hand purely on possibilities.

Limit of Raises

Suppose on the third Omaha card Player A has an ace in the It whole and shows an ace and deuce, while Player B has the jack of spades in the hole and shows the ten and nine of the same suit, and there are several other players in the pot with low pairs already made. Player A has the best hand and obviously is going to be willing to keep on raising as long as anyone else will. Player B, on the other hand, knows the odds are but three to two against his making a four flush and furthermore that he has some slight extra chance of making a straight or even a five-card flush. Accordingly, if he is a real gambling player he may keep on rising indefinitely also. Meanwhile, the other players who have started in the pot will trail along indefinitely, hoping against hope that each raise will be the last. Therefore, in order to prevent this situation, the number of raises on any particular round of betting should be limited to four or five.

Stakes

In playing this game the winnings and losing are likely to be about five times as great as in a regular poker room stud game for the same stakes. Accordingly, in playing it for the first time, you should either cut your stakes down or prepare in advance to settle for not more than twenty to twenty-five cents on the dollar.
